Third Special 200th Anniversary Service
Our guest preacher is the Rev. Dr. Catherine Maclean, Minister of St. Paul’s United Church in Edmonton. The title of her sermon is “Party in the public square,” coming from her general theme of the power of a broad and caring community.
For the prelude, the Wayne C. Vance Organ Scholar Michael Oldaker will play Praeludium in E minor by Nicolaus Bruhns and Intermezzo from Sonata No. 3 by Josef Rheinberger. Minister of Music Dr. Patricia Wright will play Toccata in Seven by John Rutter for the postlude. The Metropolitan Choir will sing Sweet Prospect, a traditional American shape note tune arranged by Dr. Carol Matthews, and Dedication, written in 1992 with text by Dr. Malcolm Sinclair and music by Dr. Patricia Wright. At the Offertory the Metropolitan Handbell Choir will play This Little Light of Minearranged by Allan Robert Petker. The final piece in the carillon prelude played by Roy Lee is Festive Fanfare by John Courter. The hymns are No.240 (Praise, My Soul, the God of Heaven), No.562 (Jesus Calls Us), and No.584 (Through the Heart of Every City).
The Bible texts are Nehemiah 8:1-12 (Ezra summons the people to obey the law), Psalm 84 (the joy of worship in the temple), and Mark 1:16-20 (Jesus calls the first disciples).
Did you know? Our Fall Fair will follow in the park right after the service. To launch the Fair, Carillonneur Roy Lee will play a new piece commissioned for our 200th anniversary. Gordon Slater, retired Dominion Carillonneur and son of retired Metropolitan Carillonneur James Slater, has composed Carillon Impromptu for Metropolitan's 200th which incorporates several Thanksgiving hymns.
