Metropolitan United Church has a long history of supporting the vulnerable in the downtown core of Toronto. The Out of the Cold program at Metropolitan United Church was launched in 1994. Over the years, until the COVID crisis, this program served thousands of meals and offered a warm and welcoming space for many socially and economically vulnerable guests.

Met hosts two Friday meal programs co-ordinated and staffed by volunteers from the congregation and the community:

Winter Community Meal Program
From November through May the Met Winter Community Meal Program serves meals to approximately 60 visitors every Friday, as well as meals that are taken away. Over 100 hot meals (meat and vegetarian) are prepared, along with soup, muffins, cookies, bread, yogurt, fruit and hot/old beverages. A team of 25 volunteers each week prepare the food, serve guests, and create a welcoming environment in the warmth of the Met Centre.

Summer Community Meal Program
While winter is the time of great need, income and food insecurity do not disappear with warmer weather. In response to the need in our urban neighbourhood, MET has established the Summer Community Meal Program on Fridays from June through September.

The Trinity Café, which is open Monday to Thursday in our space, prepares bagged lunches (sandwich, fruit, dessert and beverage). These meals are distributed at a tent near the southwest entrance to the church from 11 am to 12:30 pm by a small team (6-8) of volunteers.
